Peter Bell Poem Analysis - 754 Words

There is an alluring quality to â€Å"Peter Bell† that invites the reader to become engrossed in the suspense of the tale. In an article entitled, â€Å"’I Should like to Spend My Whole Life in Reading It:’ Repetition and the Pleasure of the Gothic,† Rebecca E. Martin confirms the alluring quality of the gothic mode of writing. Martin affirms, â€Å"Studies of modern readers of the so-called ‘female Gothic’ find that many readers will not put a book down until they have finished; in addition, many report reading several novels in a week, which strongly suggests that they are more interested in repetition, continuation and beginning again, than in endings† (76). Wordsworth builds suspense during Peter Bell’s journey by describing the landscape as he†¦show more content†¦The parodies of â€Å"Peter Bell† aim to belittle Wordsworth’s character by portraying the poet as an egotistical maniac, who uses Peter Bel l to push his conservative agenda. Brian Bates asserts, â€Å"Such criticism implies that his characters have no active or useful poetic function; having been reconceived under the aegis of political conservatism, these characters are, Reynolds suggests, poetically old, useless, and static† (278). Opponents may argue that Peter Bell is not a useless character, since the narrator begins the tale describing the various townspeople in order for the reader to find a commonality between themselves and one of the characters in the tale. In an article entitled, â€Å"The Redemption of Peter Bell,† Melvin Watson discusses the intricacies behind Wordsworth’s narration style. Watson declares, †Wordsworth has put the narrator clearly and firmly in command of the story, though usually in the background, as he analyzes, comments, and interprets for us [†¦] He is not made into a convincing dramatic character, for that would detract from our interest in Peter Bellâ € (524). Peter Bell’s role within the poem is crucial because the journey is entirely his own, yet we, as readers are given the opportunity to watch his transformation unfold and thus become sympathetic to his tribulation. Prior to the introduction of the characters, the narrator asserts, â€Å"The world for my remarks and me / Will not a whit the better be,† suggesting that he has no desire toShow MoreRelatedBells for John Whitesides Daughter by John Crowe Ransom873 Words   |  3 PagesRansom was one of the prominent leaders of the Fugitive Agrarians and the founder of the New Criticism school of literary criticism and the literary journal, Kenyon Review. The Two Parts of To Kill a Mockingbird Essay Example For Students

The Two Parts of To Kill a Mockingbird Essay When an author divides a novel into two separate parts he or she does it purposely to show either a large dynamic change in a character or little to no change at all. Harper Lee, author of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, separates her novel into Part and Part II. Part I is more of an overview that foreshadows What is to come later on; she lets the reader get to know the characters and the setting Of the book Which takes place during the Great Depression in the deep south Of Macomb, Alabama. As the book progresses and the reader begins Part II the deader becomes submerged into a trial that will change the little town of Macomb forever. While some aspects of the town are willing to change to make things work, others show the ability to make a gradual change and some things resist change completely. In the asss race and gender create strong divisions within society. The Deep South of Alabama is a hard place for most blacks to live due to the whites refusal to give up their belief of supremacy. This sense of racism is so extreme and vulgar that the Whites will do anything to stay separated from the blacks of the community. Not only is this sense to racism strong in this community of Macomb but gender distinctions are as well. Women are expected to hold a certain spot in the social scene but are never seen equal to men. Between men and women the distinctions were not a radical as the distinctions between whites and blacks but they are still very visible. Even at young ages girls are supposed to act a certain way, Its time you started been a girl and acting right! (Lee 115). Scouts older brother, Gem, to Scout shows how even at such a young age girls are expected to know their place and not do what boys do. These distinctions in the immunity can be seen clearly through the transgender and trans-racial snowman that Gem and Scout make the first time they ever see snow. The snowman is both a layer of white snow and brown mud and neither of the two things together, but Stay separ ated. This is used to show how the races in the community are separated and do not join together. The snowman also includes both male and female features and clothing; this shows the distinctions in the men and women. The snowman shows that no matter how hard the community tries to come together they will always be divided by these harsh but real distinctions. Although the harsh distinctions in gender and race sometimes cause problems in coming together as a community, tragedies tend to bring people closer than ever. Miss Medias house fire symbolizes how people can come together despite differences. All the men on the block together to save Miss Maude and her house along with the firemen coming to put the tire out. This sense to community is strong in part I because we see that coming together is possible, Tactics, Gem and Scouts father, is seen to be one of the leaders in the town and is able to shoot down the mad dog coming towards the people, who signifies the immunity coming together but also the shooting down of racism in the town. This mad dog has the very expendable disease of rabies and is supposed to symbolize the madness of racism coming through the town. When Tactics shoots the dog it Suggests him shooting down racism, leading the reader to believe that Tactics has this power to bring the community together. California, the Finchs black housekeeper, also plays a role in caring for the entire community by knocking on everyones doors letting them know that they should stay inside. It is worth noting that Cal goes to the front doors knocking and warning people, even Hough she is black and should be using the back doors. This shows how in this crisis the community can forget about race distinctions and work together. Intersectionality : A Sociological And Critical TheoryAfter the killing of Tom the community was ripped apart again, all because of the hatred towards a black man, Harper Lee shows that throughout the book and throughout life some people cannot change, that even when a community is brought together there will still always he underlying things that rip apart a community which stop change trot happening. Women are a part of this community of Macomb and even though their roles o not seem as important as mens, they are a part of society. We saw through the snowman that the women are separated from men. Towards the latter part of the novel Aunt Alexandra missionary meeting includes a tea party was intended to teach Scout how. to be a lady, Throughout this party Scout attentively watches and listens to the oven speak; through all this she truly found that all they were saying was petty gossip She also came to understand that women tend to be hypocrites; they say that they do for the Lord mean while they are talking down or being rude to their black housekeepers. In contrast to these petty ways of the women Miss Maude is a woman who carries herself independently through her thoughtful ideas and sensitivity. She does not let these women influence her and she continues to be kind and open hearted to everyone. Yet Miss Maude is just one person and even though she is influential in the childrens lives she is not so influential towards the other women. Scout being at such a young age can still realize that certain roles are expected from women which include carrying on domestic duties while having a social life, and caring for the children. Although women supposed to hold a certain place in the social scene, they are not allowed to hold a place on a jury. She realizes that women are held ATA lower ground than men and less is expected from women than men. The differences and separation between men and women show another instance where Lee demonstrates the lack of change between Parts and II, and how society will always contain gender separations. Even though Tactics loses the trial and Tom Robinson is killed, there is a sense of gradual change in the community; this small change includes Tactics being re- elected into the legislature despite his having defending Tom. Some people in the community spoke out about his actions saying how it was wrong and how he was a Niger lover, yet the community still sees him as a strong leader no matter what Vass said in the past Even though they hue not been able to truly accept blacks in the community this baby step toward change signals the possibility of greater change in the future. The community it seems doesnt want to hold anything against Tactics for, he is an important part of the community, and they really want the community to work. Harper Lee avgas able to show different variations of change in people, ideas and the community Of Macomb in both parts and II. Lees dynamic novel is based on the beliefs of racism, segregation and much distinction, factors that cause problems in society; some problems are more easily fixed than Others and some take more than one person to fix. People and human nature are the root of all the wrongs and rights and we can see how sometimes change in people and behaviors comes and goes, happens slowly or just does not happen at all in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.

My pursuit of a graduate degre... free essay sample

My pursuit of a graduate degree in engineering began with one very simple device-a mouse trap. The mission-to maximize the distance traveled by a mouse trap propelled vehicle . Winning this competition, part of my High School introductory physics course, was an event that sparked my life-long interest in engineering. I didnt know that 5 years later I would be applying to one the elite engineering schools in the country, but I did recognize that innate curiosity within me to push limits and tackle challenges. Since that experience, I have taken advantage of every opportunity available to develop my problem-solving skills and apply my knowledge to real-world applications. My decision to pursue graduate studies in mechanical engineering roots from my desire to solve problems of future, contribute to quality research, and promote education. This decision came as a byproduct of my success as an undergraduate-I consistently attain top scores in the class- and aspiration to achieve more. We will write a custom essay sample on My pursuit of a graduate degre or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Xxxx was a logical choice because it provides high-quality research laboratories in the areas I am interested, valuable resources, and the flexibility required such that both myself and xxxx benefit from my attendance. My Junior year, I was fortunate to meet Professor Mo Samimy who runs the Gas Dynamics and Turbulence Lab (GDTL) at The Ohio State University. I quickly got underway with research in the field of aerodynamic flow control. My research activities first consisted of an extensive literature review of flow control methods used in the past as well as familiarization with the laboratory facilities. By working with Dr. Little, who now is a faculty member at the University of Arizona, I learned how to effectively measure and interpret flow properties via static pressure taps, dynamic pressure transducers, hot film anemometers, and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). I also learned to analyze data using MATLAB.The research quickly moved into implementing classroom knowledge and lab experience which I had developed. The team I work with at GDTL mainly experiments with flow control via dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuators which work by inducing momentum into the flow, thereby delaying separation and increasing lift. I have assisted with the experimental testing and closed-loop control of nanosecond (NS) pulse generated plasma, thought to be superior to the more traditional AC generated plasma. My most recent work involved designing a wall-mounted hump which I will use to control the state of the incoming boundary layer. The culmination of this work will include writing and defending a the sis at the end of the school year as part of the undergraduate research program at Ohio State. As alluded to previously, my pursuits in science and engineering began long before I came to The Ohio State University. In high school I was active in activities such as Academic Team, Junior Scholars, science club, and TEAM+S (Tests of Engineering, Aptitude, Math, and Science). My first real leadership experiences came in completing a large landscaping project at my local parish to earn my Eagle Scout award. The true foundation and beginning of my pursuit in engineering began when I was a freshman in the Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors (FEH) program at Ohio State. The program taught core engineering/math/science concepts and fostered an environment where students were challenged to make discoveries on their own. The program culminated with an autonomous robot competition at the end of the year which required working efficaciously in a team environment and solving problems on the fly. Another useful experience for my future aspirations is my work as a math teaching assistant a t Ohio State. This challenge has enabled me to develop my communication skills inside the classroom as well as prepare me for future teaching opportunities.Furthermore, I have held two valuable internships/quasi-research opportunities over the course of my education at Ohio State. One of these was working in the Applied Research Division at Minster Machine, a world-wide leader in the press industry. Here I worked to improve product efficiency and fatigue life via design modifications, testing (using LVDTs, accelerometers, and pressure transducers), and data analysis. My other internship was this past summer was with the U.S. Army in which I investigated the consistency of the clay backing used to measure the impact of the ammunition on the body armor. My initial goal is to complete a MS degree in Mechanical Engineering and then to continue on to Ph.D. My overarching career objective is to become a valued faculty member at a respected research university who challenges students to expand their horizons and aim to reach their full potential. However, I also realize that these opportunities are limited and that an industry position utilizing my research aptitudes would be a good fit as well.My desire to be a valuable asset at xxxx encompasses working alongside talented faculty/graduate students and contributing to work that has direct impact on future generations. The decision to apply to xxxx was an arduous task that involved pouring through tons of literature, websites, and forums to see where I would fit in best. Two research areas really stood out to me for why xxxx would be a good choice for me- those being Fluid Mechanics and the Energy Science and Engineering area. The research labs that struck me with particular interest were the experimental sides of the Reacting Gas Dynamics Laboratory and the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory. These are areas where I have a passion for as well as the core knowledge/experience to succeed. Along with the introductory thermo/fluids courses which I have excelled in, I am currently taking a graduate level course in compressible flow, and next quarter I am taking a graduate course in combustion.I hope that you find my previous research experience and academic qualifications well-suited for a MS at xxxx. I have a firm grasp of fluid/thermal/energy concepts along with the enthusiasm necessary to tackle engineering challenges. Thank you.
